A new thing I have decided to do: Friday Favorites. Twitter does it, so why not me? My favorites are a little different. Every week I am going to focus on things that I have an obsession with in some way. Maybe someone will learn something new about me. Maybe I will just highly enjoy fangirling every week.
We’re going to start with Nightwing of the Batman (DC Comics) fame. Richard “Dick” Grayson was the first Robin. He is the Robin everyone knows about. When Dick tried to break away from being Batman’s shadow, he took on the Nightwing moniker. It was the 80′s and he was given some very bad fashion by the comic creators. But it fit in with the 80′s. Then he got his revamp. That is when I fell in love. I wasn’t too old yet but damn if he wasn’t high on my list of favorite males. Nevermind that he wasn’t real at all. Not even an actor to swoon over.
When he was introduced in the animated series… es… I only fell more in love. Being able to see him in motion was a dream. I don’t care that it was someone else’s vision; he was every bit as kick-ass as I had always seen him in my head. I could care less about his civilian persona or how much of a man-whore he is within the DC universe (because you know he is!)… I love Nightwing. Mmm. Yum.
Back when I was writing fanfiction, back before fanfiction.net even existed–man I’m old, my first DC comic focus was within the Batman fandom. Nightwing was the focus. Forget the Batman. I wanted more Nightwing and if I could only get it by writing it? So be it.
Fast forward to about a decade and a half later and I was collecting the comic books finally, pouring over them with a voracity that I had only displayed with books previously. I wanted to see more of this gorgeous, costumed man. I won’t even go into how much money was spent by both myself and Rick in getting me everything that was available. Needless to say, it was a lot. But so very, very worth it. Everyone has their favorite comic book characters. Nightwing was one of two of my favorite DC characters. Plain and simple.
At Comic Con this year, I ran into a decent Nightwing cosplayer… while wearing my Nightwing shirt. I asked him if I could have my picture taken with him and he looked at me in surprise. He then grinned after seeing my shirt, complimented it, and posed with me. Made the Top 5 Moments of my SDCC2010 experience. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am just that much of a geek.
